about

'in the small hours', is sky coloured's second record, the follow-up to their debut, 'Starting Time', in which lead singer and songwriter Anthony has been exploring the complex relationship between his background and the very different world he now inhabits.

'Even at its most opaque, 'in the small hours' has a rich sense of sonics, with those jazz flourishes building into something beautiful, but still abstract.' (Clash)

Born in London but growing up abroad as part of an evangelical Christian community, much of the focus of his life and work has been on reconciling something of the faith he grew up with, though no longer shares, with the western, secular world as he has experienced it since the family’s return to Britain. Pop music, which he experienced only intermittently due to being raised in secluded religious institutions, was always a source of fascination. Even as pop seemed to offer an escape from the confines of a rigid moral universe, it also, over time, showed itself to have deep ties to Christianity, most significantly via its debt to the African-American gospel tradition.

The six tracks on this EP, in very different ways, all explore this tension, with the help of some of London's most brilliant young jazz musicians, and the outstanding production work of Jordan Parry.
